Natural white cotton selvedge denim, the composition is cotton plus a touch of elastane. This fabric has a slightly dry, very cottony hand-feel that is comfortable against the skin. It is densely woven and basically opaque against the skin except over high-contrast colours. Fabric is structured and holds its shape, with barely any drape. Ideal for jeans and shorts, also suitable for overalls, shackets, structured dresses, kids wear, etc. Better for clothing rather than crafts since it has stretch. I find this denim is a little too thick for use in elasticated garments.
Selvedge denim is manufactured on older looms and is of narrow width compared to most modern fabrics. The coloured selvedge is often left as-is in the finished garment. For reference, here are some sewing patterns specifically designed for selvedge denim (though they may need a bit of tweaking for stretch):
- Anna Allen's Helene selvedge jeans
- Merchant & Mills' Heroine jeans
- Merchant & Mills' Clementine skirt
- Halfmoon Atelier's 101 jeans
